Remember back in January 2020 when we were all filled with hope and optimism? Well, back then, for the first time I set myself a word for the year. The word I chose was growth because I wanted to experience growth in all areas of my life, and it actually worked.
2020 wasn’t an easy year but reflecting on the year, I really did experience growth. I invested in myself, I took the plunge into full time self-employment, I started a business, I learnt more about self love, self growth and mindset, I became a qualified life coach. Hand on heart, I can say I grew in 2020.
But why is having a word for the year important?
Having a word of the year is like setting an intention for the year. It’s something which guides you whilst you’re making decisions and is like an internal compass.
It’s a gentle guide to help you prioritise what you want to experience in the following 12 months. Say you’re wanting to slow down for the year, your word may be calm. Or say you’re wanting to be healthier, nourish may be your word – nourish your body, your mind and your soul.
Unlike a new years resolution, choosing a word for the year provides more flexibility and give you a stronger sense of self awareness as you let the word guide you through your year.
How do you choose your word?
When it comes to choosing your word, it may flow to you quite quickly and stand out in your mind. But sometimes, it’s not as obvious, and there are some simple steps to help you choose your word of the year. Here are some simple journal prompts to help you along the way;
What went well this past year? How did you feel? What didn’t go well?
How do you want to feel the upcoming year? What do you want to achieve in the following 12 months?
Look at that list of words which describe how you want to feel in the upcoming year. Is there a specific one which stands out to you?
Once you have your word, keep it with you and let it guide you. Keep it where you’ll see it; maybe on your desk, by your bed – somewhere where you can see it and remind yourself of your intention.
The word I chose for 2020 is BOLD. This year I’m striving to be bolder. Bold in the choices I make, not being scared to speak up more or taking those BIG steps which can feel scary. I’m excited to see where the next year takes me, and how bold is going to manifest itself into my life.
