How to make time for your wellbeing

September 21, 2020Wellbeing

How many times do you find yourself thinking you would love to do X if only you had the time.

I’d love to journal every day, but I just don’t have the time. I’m so busy so I can’t do yoga every day. I wish that I had the time to read every day.

We put so much pressure on ourselves to do everything, to the point where it feels like we just can’t fit it all in.

I know myself, I’ve told myself time and time again that I just don’t have enough time.

But then, I realised that if I didn’t make my wellbeing a priority, not only was I going to have an unfulfilled life, my chronic illness would take control.

Once I started making my wellbeing a priority, and made time for it, I started to feel better. No, I didn’t cure my chronic illnesses, but it reframed my mindset, I found I was having more good days, I felt lighter and happier.

But how can I make time for wellbeing when I’m so busy???

5 ways to make time for your wellbeing

Decide on your non-negotiables

The first thing you need to do is decide on your non negotiable wellbeing tasks.

Make a list of things you know are going to make you feel good, and then make a decision on the things you’re going to make time for, no matter what.

Maybe you want to run 5k every weekday morning. That’s your non-negotiable – no matter what the weather is, what plans are being made, nothing is going to interrupt that time in your day.

For me, I do morning stretches, my daily dog walk and journalling. They’re things for me which are non-negotiable and no matter what, I will do.

Block out time in your diary

Just like you block out your time for work, block out time for your wellbeing. If it’s in the diary, you’re more likely to still have the time.

Whether it’s blocking out 30 minutes for your morning and evening routines, blocking out your daily exercise or time to read.

This will help get you into the habits and routines you want to create, and then it’ll become second nature for you

Group together similar tasks

You know how you group together work tasks which are similar, well the same applies to wellbeing tasks.

Whether it’s telling yourself positive affirmations when you do your skincare routine, listen to high vibe podcasts whilst working or doing your gratitude journal at the same time as your normal journal.

Have a look at how different wellbeing tasks might work well together, and they can act as reminders to do them too!

Don’t do it for the sake of doing it

This is a huge one! Just because Suzie Sue on instagram is doing a full yoga flow and run in the morning doesn’t mean that you have to do that.

Look at what makes you feel GOOD. What you enjoy to do, and then try different things to see what works for you.

Wellbeing is meant to be enjoyable

Here’s your reminder that your wellbeing isn’t meant to feel like a chore. It’s meant to feel enjoyable and something that you want to do to feel good.

Don’t do things you don’t enjoy or don’t feel good afterwards. Shelve that and try something new.
