Autumn is well and truly here and I love the cosiness that the season brings. Even though the weather is a lot colder, there’s something very warming about the season.
This season brings lots of opportunities to work on your wellbeing and self care, so here is this seasons to do list…
Go on a walk
The colours in autumn are my absolute favourite. Make sure you’re going out and watching the colours change. Maybe you want to pick up some conkers and pine cones on your way as well.
I love taking my camera out during this season and taking the last pictures of the year of leaves on the trees.
Make sure you’re wrapping up warm, and treat yourself to a mug of hot chocolate, tea or coffee and maybe a slice of cake too!
Get Crafty
With us being home more, why not get a little crafty during the season. Whether it’s candle and soap making, getting prepared for Christmas making cards or decorations or unleashing your inner Picasso.
Find a way to get crafty and go wild!
Embrace Hygge
The danish word and practice of Hygge is something I LOVE and something I think we should all be bringing into our lives, especially with everything going on in 2020!
Google defines Hygge as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).”
Hygge was created by the Danes to help get through the long, dark and cold winters and the aim is to find moments to celebrate, acknowledge and break up the mundane or harsh.
Finding joy and happiness in the simple pleasures of life; a cup of coffee, candlelight, stopping at the local bakery – Danes see life as an art form and not something we’re just trying to get through.
Entice the senses
Something I love about autumn is the smells; crisp and cold mornings, the burning of candles, cinnamon, pine resin, apples and a real musky smell – especially when I’m burning sandalwood candles!
Find ways to make your space smell of the season with candles and cooking, create a Hygge environment and find your vibes being raised just by the sent.
Boost your immune system
Global pandemic or not, Autumn is the time to start thinking about boosting your immune system. It gets colder and our immune systems are weaker so we’re more likely to pick up coughs, sneezes, flu and other bugs.
Try adding more turmeric, ginger and citrus to your food and drinks as well as vitamin C. It’s also important to check your Vitamin D levels and take a supplement. The days are shorter with a lot less sunlight, and vitamin D is really important for our immune systems, fatigue levels and aches and pains.
Book your flu jab
Linked to boosting your immune system – get your flu jab booked in! Check if your eligible for a free one, or buy one at your local pharmacy – they’re around £10.00.
Eat in-season food
I don’t know about you, but as soon as the cold weather comes, I crave stews and soups. Those hearty and warm dishes which just feel cosy.
In season food in Autumn include;
- Root vegetables: carrots, squash, pumpkin and sweet potato
- Whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, oats and millet
- Legumes: beans, chickpeas and lentils
- Green vegetables: broccoli, spinach, kale, celery, rocket and artichokes
- Fruit: apples, citrus fruits and pears
- Fish: sea bass, cod, sole and haddock
- Herbs: ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, rosemary, thyme, basil and dill.
Moisturise your skin
As the weather gets colder, our skin is more likely to dry out. Skincare is something which feeds my soul, I love it!
So make sure you upping your moisturiser game; that’s face, body, hands and lips!
Create new traditions
2020 has been something, hasn’t it. And it looks like our usual end of year things are going to be very different as well.
So this year, look at how you can change your traditions, maybe make some new ones in the process too!
I’m planning crafting and baking days, bringing back my Grandma’s Christmas cake recipe (which you start in October!) and creating our own seasonal milestones, at home rather than out!
How are you embracing the season?
