I’ve needed glasses for 10 years and it’s safe to say, I get on pretty well with them. I was that kid who always wanted glasses so once I actually needed them, I was quite pleased! However, as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that sometimes, glasses can be a bit of a nuisance. Whether it’s going to the gym or on a (rare) night out, sometimes you’d rather not be wearing glasses.
When Vision Direct got in contact asking if I wanted to trial their contact lenses, it’s safe to say I was intrigued. For the past year or so, I’ve been wanting to try them but just hadn’t got around to it!
I wanted to take you on my contact lens journey, so to speak, and share with you how I’ve found the whole process!

The fear of contact lenses
It’s safe to say that I was slightly worried when it came to trying contact lenses.
Just the thought of touching my eye and having something literally on the eye freaked me out.
My initial fears going in were mainly that I would get a contact lens stuck in my eye. I also was certain that I wouldn’t be able to get them in and out. Even though friends who have them make it look SO easy, I was convinced that I wouldn’t have the skill.
Plus, the thought of touching my eye just freaked me out.
But everyone I know who wears them always raves about them and says how much they prefer them to glasses! So I knew I had to at least try them!
Trialling contact lenses
Before you try contact lenses, you have to go to an opticians appointment as your contact lens prescription is different to your glasses prescription.
Also, there is so much to learn before you go away and wear them.
From getting them in and out, to finding the right type of lens to general contact lens care as well there’s a lot!
The first thing is finding the right lens for you. I’ve ended up with 1-Day Acuvue Moist lenses. For me, they were the easiest to get in and out plus I liked how they weren’t too drying on my eyes.
Then it was time to learn how to take them in and out.
I’ll be honest with you, I felt really anxious that I’d do it wrong.
The optician did it first for me, so I could get a feel for what they felt like. It was quite daunting having someone literally poking your eye but it turns out I don’t have a strong blink reflex which made it a lot easier!
Then it was my turn and I was shocked at how quickly I picked it up. It felt slightly strange at first but I got really used to it pretty quickly. After a little bit of practice I got the hang of it and it turns out, getting them in and out isn’t that difficult.
After my eye check, I learnt all about caring for my contact lenses and the do’s and don’t of them.
5 things to remember when you’re wearing contact lenses
- always wash your hands before using contact lenses
- if one falls off your finger onto the table/side/sink/floor OPEN A NEW ONE
- contact lenses and water don’t mix – don’t go swimming or shower in your contacts, as swimming pools and water generally contain bacteria.
- put your contact lenses in BEFORE you put on makeup but take them out before you take your makeup off
- don’t fall asleep in them. Your eyes will dry out and the lens can become uncomfortable to remove
After my initial consultation, I took some trial lenses at home. Something I started to struggle with was dry eyes, to the point where it was just too uncomfortable to wear.
When I went back to the opticians, I was told I have dry eyes which can be easily sorted with some eye drops which I’ve been trying and it’s helped a lot!

Using Vision Direct
Once I had my prescription, I was ready to go and order my first box of contact lenses from Vision Direct!
I headed on over and was amazed at the sheer selection of contact lenses available and the price which is lower than I’d seen elsewhere.
You can search by either the brand or the type of lenses you want or by how frequent you wear them.
Then you add in your prescription, how many boxes you want per eye (which also tells you how many pairs of lenses you’ll actually have!) and voila!
I also went to the eye care section of the website as I wanted to try some eye drops as well. This is where the review feature came into it’s own! There were so many different dry eye treatments it was hard to choose but in the end I opted for the Blink Intensive Tears Bottle as they were a really good price (£5.99) and had good reviews as well!
I ordered at 8pm on a Monday night and they’d arrived by 12pm the next day which was phenomenal. So if you’re in a rush for lenses, this is the place to go.
You’ll also get reminders to order and can reorder in 3 clicks – so you’ll never be out of lenses!
Overall thoughts
It’s safe to say I was sceptical at first when it came to contact lenses.
However, once I was over the fear of them, I actually really liked them. They’re convenient and easy to do. Plus, it feels great to be able to see without wearing your glasses – and very surreal after 10 years of not having that luxury!
You’ll still catch me wearing my glasses at times but I’m a big fan of wearing contact lenses for social events, the gym and yoga as it’s so much easier than having your glasses!
